It’s alive! Alive!
During its Tudum event this weekend, Netflix finally revealed our first proper look at monster maestro Guillermo Del Toro’s hotly anticipated new adaptation of Frankenstein. And it’s just as gothic, creepy and beautiful as you might imagine.
Everyone knows the story of Mary Shelley’s classic sci-fi horror novel by now - obsessed with life and death, troubled scientist Victor Frankenstein (here played by Oscar Isaac) decides to play god, cobbling together a creature from various body parts and bringing it to life.
As you might imagine, it all goes terribly wrong.
Isaac is joined by an all-star cast, including Ralph Ineson (The Witch), Cristoph Waltz (Inglorious Basterds), Mia Goth (MaXXXine) and Jacob Elordi (Saltburn) as the creature. Plus, with Del Toro behind the lens - this is a passion project for him - you just know there’ll be some sumptuous production design and eye-popping visuals.
We can’t wait for this one.
Wicked: For Good

In cinemas 21st November
Ready to defy gravity one more time? The conclusion to John M Chu’s epic, two-part adaptation of the musical phenomenon will finally be released this winter, and if the reaction to the first half is anything to go by, it’s sure to be another massive hit.
We pick up the story with Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) now living in exile, but still working to expose the dastardly machinations of the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum). Judging by this trailer, it’s going to be an epic showdown.
Black Phone 2

In cinemas 17th October
2022’s The Black Phone, adapted from a story by Joe Hill, was a tense, creepy little thriller with a killer hook - a kid abducted by a monstrous serial killer begins to get phone calls from the ghosts of previous victims, helping him to survive and escape.
You’d be forgiven for thinking that the story was done after that first movie, but thanks to a decent box office haul The Black Phone is back from the dead, now transformed into a horror franchise.
To be fair, the sequel retains the same writers and director (C Robert Cargill and Scott Derrickson), and all of the stellar cast - not least Mason Thames (How To Train Your Dragon) as our unfortunate hero and Ethan Hawke (Before Sunrise) as the terrifying Grabber.
Here’s hoping it’s another hit, and not a… missed call? Insert your own phone-related pun here.
Wake Up Dead Man

On Netflix 12th December
Another exciting nugget from the Tudum event is this brief, tantalising glimpse at the third film in Rian Johnson’s series of Benoit Blanc whodunnits - following Knives Out and Glass Onion, of course.
Like those previous entries, this one has a starry ensemble cast - Glenn Close! Cailee Spaeny! Josh Brolin! - and Daniel Craig as the Southern-fried detective at the heart of another head-scratching murder mystery.
Little is known about the plot, but it seems to heavily involve a crumbling old church and Josh O’Connor’s bloodied, manic priest. The game is, once again, afoot.
Good Fortune

In cinemas 17th October
Keanu Reeves (John Wick) stars as a lowly guardian angel - usually responsible for stopping people checking their phone while driving - who is given the chance to save a few lost souls in modern-day Los Angeles.
This is written and directed by Aziz Ansari (Master of None), and seems to have plenty of his introspective comedy and spot-on commentary on modern life. Plus Keanu Reeves with cute little wings.
Also stars Ansari himself, Seth Rogen (The Studio), Keke Palmer (Nope) and Sandra Oh (Killing Eve).
Happy Gilmore 2

On Netflix 25th July
The comeback is on!
Rageful hockey-player-turned-golfer Happy Gilmore (Adam Sandler) steps out of retirement and back onto the green in this belated sequel, hoping to raise enough money to send his daughter to dance school.
Along the way he’ll have to keep his rage in check, reconnect with his past and face off against old enemies like arch-nemesis Shooter McGavin (Christopher McDonald).
A Big Bold Beautiful Journey

In cinemas September
Colin Farrell and Margot Robbie star as strangers who embark on - you guessed it - a big, bold, beautiful journey across the country and, through a series of magical doors, into their own pasts.
There’s some cool fantasy imagery here, and some powerful, life-affirming scenes of confronting trauma and regret. Don’t forget to bring the tissues - this one looks like a real tearjerker…
TV Shows
Stranger Things

Season 5 on Netflix this Winter
There’s not much in the way of new footage in this date announcement trailer, but there’s enough tantalising glimpses to get us excited about what’s in store for Eleven and friends in this climactic season.
With big bad Vecna looking to break down the walls between our world and the Upside Down - and unleash an army of monsters in the process - it’ll take the whole party to fight back and stop him.
And now we know when we’ll find out just how they’ll fare. As per this trailer, the first part of Season 5 will be released on 26th November, with the second part dropping over Christmas and the grand finale appearing on New Year’s Eve.
There’s no doubt at all that it’s going to be epic.
Gen V

Season 2 on Prime Video from 17th September
The teen-centric spin-off from The Boys returns with a second season, and it’s sophomore year at Godolkin University - essentially a training institute for new Vought-controlled super heroes.
There’s all the chaos and drama you might expect in this brief teaser, as well as some tantalising glimpses of a few heavy-hitters from The Boys, namely problematic Aquaman proxy The Deep (Chace Crawford) and alt-right spokeswoman Firecracker (Valorie Curry).
Dexter: Resurrection

Season 1 on Paramount+ from 11th July
Dexter Morgan, that lovable killer of killers, is back in a big way at the moment. Following hot on the heels of New Blood and the recent prequel series, Original Sin, comes Resurrection, a brand new continuation of the ongoing Dexter saga.
This time, Dexter and his Dark Passenger are heading to the Big Apple, where they’ll quickly become embroiled in the machinations of a serial killer superfan and his collection of murderous psychopaths. Sounds fun!
This time, returning stars Michael C Hall and David Zayas are joined by an epic ensemble, including Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), Uma Thurman (Kill Bill), David Dastmalchian (The Suicide Squad) and Neil Patrick Harris (Gone Girl).
